Anne Räsänen

Location: University of Jyväskylä Language Centre, Finland

Anne Räsänen, PhLic, M.Ed. (OISE), is a tenured Senior Lecturer in English at the University of Jyväskylä Language Centre. The Centre is responsible for all academic and discipline-specific language and communication studies aimed at non-language degree students. Such studies are compulsory for all students in the mother tongue (usually Finnish), second national language (usually Swedish) and in one or two foreign languages. The instruction is based on collegial, cross-language action research that addresses e.g. employability and intercultural issues in the global labour market, implementation of new learning environments in language teaching and learning, and integration of content and language in promoting the development of graduates’ professional expertise in communication. In addition, the Language Centre provides staff development in various languages and in intercultural pedagogy (for teaching through English), translation and proof-reading services, as well as consultation for the research staff of the university. The Centre has some 70 multilingual and multicultural staff catering for over 500 small groups of students every year and providing contact teaching in 14 languages and self-access in some 35 languages. Anne Räsänen has extensive experience in teaching and assessing learning skills, research writing and presentation skills of non-language students at graduate and postgraduate levels. She is also responsible for coordinating the staff and student support for international English-medium Master's programmes and for evaluating such programmes as an internal auditor of the University. Other activities include leading professional action research groups as a member of the steering group for collegial pedagogical development and quality assurance, and involvement in numerous national and international networks and projects, including LANQUA, all TNPs, and DIALANG. She frequently also acts as a reviewer for publications and conferences. Her own publications total some 50, twenty of which deal with ICLHE.
