The 1st Freiburg Language Policy and Language Teaching Conference *"Multilingualism and Aspects of Intercultural and Transcultural Language Teaching
The 2010 Topic: “Multilingualism and Aspects of Intercultural and Transcultural Language Teaching” The topic for this year’s conference originated from the (very) fact that the University of Freiburg in Germany is located almost directly at the borders to Switzerland and France. This geographical location brings with it the possibility for contact and exchange with the universities and other institutions of higher education in our neighbouring countries. This in turn provides an incentive to instructors and students in all three lands. An important goal here is to encourage mobility, particularly among students, and thereby increase cross-border, educational exchange. EUCOR (European Confederation of Upper Rhine Universities) has a central function in achieving this aim. When it comes to language policy, the Upper Rhine Region has long been seen as being multilingual. Numerous measures and projects have been initiated to promote the learning of the language spoken in the neighbouring country and to ensure that residents have the language competencies needed for the regional and European employment market. This same situation can be seen all across Europe. A glance at the borders between Poland and Germany or France and Spain shows that living near to another country opens up a realm of possibilities in social, political and educational sectors, provided of course, such opportunities are taken advantage of in a timely manner and appropriate steps are initiated in the proper places, such as schools and universities. An additional influential factor is that policy efforts often ignore or underestimate intercultural and region-specific requirements. Multilingual regions, such as South Tyrol or countries like Luxemburg or Switzerland, are exemplary in that they seem to have mastered the above named hurdles. Whether despite, or perhaps (even) because of political processes, questions of identity or cultural affiliation, as well as the role of regional and minority languages and their fixed position in social and academic life are once again very current. Ireland, Wales, the Basque region or Catalonia are pressing examples. A resulting question is not only which language a teacher should speak when working in a foreign country, but also which measures should be taken in order to prepare instructors and students for teaching and learning abroad.
World-class. The brave new world of global higher education and research
The ACA seminar World-class: the brave new world of global higher education and research will introduce and critically assess the paradigm of the world-class university. It will also explore its deficits, by looking into the need for educational quality across the board, by analysing the links between the world-class concepts and the emergence of international league tables, national approaches to building excellence and, indeed, teaching. Once again, ACA has enlisted globally leading experts on the subject, to guarantee a high-quality event.
ICT for Language Learning, 3rd conference
The objective of the conference is to promote the sharing of good practice and transnational cooperation in the field of the application of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to Language Learning and Teaching. The conference will also be an excellent opportunity for the presentation of previous and current language learning projects and innovative initiatives.

Approaches to the Lexicon
The lexicon plays a central role in many areas of basic and applied sciences, from psychology and cognitive science to applied linguistics. Understanding the structure, composition and use of the lexicon holds important keys to understanding many research fields and a wide range of human activities.
Colloquium: Dynamic Language and Content Collaboration in Higher Education: theory, research, reflections.
This colloquium, a collaborative venture between Cape Peninsula Technical University, Cape Town, South Africa, and Chalmers University, Gothenburg, Sweden, is part of a South Africa/Sweden research cooperation programme entitled ‘Creating effective partnerships between content and language teachers to enhance higher education learning in multilingual contexts’. The colloquium focuses on four sub-themes: 1) theorising collaboration between language and content practitioners; 2) exploring research findings on ICL collaboration; 3) debating/discussing research methodologies for ICL research; and 4) reflecting on collaborative ICL practices.
Researching Multilingualism in Complementary Schools
Complementary schools are voluntary organisations run by minority ethnic or linguistic communities, often of immigration backgrounds, to teach languages and cultures to the local-born generations of children and young people. They have been a major global educational movement since the 1950s – variably known as heritage (language) schools, community (language) schools, or supplementary schools. Yet, public awareness of the complementary schools is low. Recently, a number of research projects have emerged in Britain, where some 3,000 complementary schools exist teaching a very wide range of languages and cultures. These research projects have demonstrated the significant impact of the complementary schools on the communities they are serving as well as the wider society and the diverse practices and ideologies amongst them. They also highlight the need for further research into these schools with particular regards to educational and social policy, community cohesion and identity development of young people. This workshop aims to introduce researchers new to complementary schools to the theoretical and methodological issues in researching this particular site of multilingualism.
Researching multilingualism: concepts, methods and issues
This 5-day residential course is designed for post-Foundation doctoral researchers and for (early careers) post-doctoral researchers who are engaged in research on multilingualism. It is being organised as part of an advanced research training project on Researching multilingualism, multilingualism in research practice (RES 046-25-0004), funded by the ESRC under its Researcher Development Initiative (RDI), from May 2010 to April 2013.
Multilingualism in Higher Education
The aim of this seminar is to promote a dialogue between two research areas addressing educational multilingualism, i.e. CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) and community language teaching. By bringing together these two strands of research this seminar hopes to explore common ground and foster methodological and theoretical synergies.
